Sunnyside Farms was founded in the 1950s’s as a compilation of developed farmland pooled by Craig Irwin, Bert Irwin, Claude Irwin, Ernest Irwin and others. The land that was developed on south of the Florida Mountains in Deming, New Mexico on water from a closed basin and thus the acreage at Sunnyside Farms will never be expanded.
The farm was sold in 1997 shortly before the death of Bert Irwin. It was re-acquired by the Irwin Family fully in 2007 and has since been growing through an extensive rebuilding phase. Initially the reformation of Sunnyside Farms was to hinge on organic growth but the need for heavy nutrients in the soil for grass production ruled out that option. Through research done during organic development, many natural bacteria growth options were discovered which have been a healthy boon to the soil.
After living and working in Las Cruces for 20 years, Craig and Mackey made the decision to return to Sunnyside Farms where they oversee daily management more closely. Craig’s aim is to build the farm into a highly sustainable operation that produces pasture crops to feed beef cattle for market.
